RE: Towing in windy conditions...

I won't abandon this site, there is a lot of great information and some very friendly advice that I try to apply.
Hopefully the new mirrors that I bought and will have put on will help on our next trip.
I won't let the crumudgens get me down, we have too much fun travelling with our little "tuna can" ( as the DW calls it.)

RE: Towing in windy conditions...

I would like to thank all of the input. I appreciate everyone's opinion. After having slowed down, yes every thing was fine. As for pulling off and resuming the next day, that was not an option at the time since my wife and I aren't retired and have a child still in school. The need to return to our home base was essential.
But to be understood, yes, if slowing down hadn't helped I would have stopped and resumed travel early the next morning.
As for the phone, I don't use it while driving except in emergency situations. The main reason that me and DW have cell phones is so that when we are travelling in seperate vehicles, we can communicate problems so that they can be dealt with safely. I won't appologize for having my phone available for her to reach me if she identifies a problem.
I have purchased some new mirrors by Power Vision so that I will be able to see better.
All things considered, I am beginning to wonder if this is truely a place to post questions and expect a civil reply. While some have been very helpful and considerate, others have not. I have been towing my little 19' trailer with my Expedition for a total of four months. Yes, I am very green and have no other source to ask about situations.
If this is going to be a place to learn and assist those who are just getting into this area of family fun, then let's remember that we all start out at the beginning. I have seen some very honest posts that realize I am doing my best to gain information to ensure that me, my family or yours aren't injured as I learn.
My wife and I would like to eventually do this full time. I hope that when I get more experienced that I will have the patience to advise, not ridicule those who ask information of me.
On a lighter note. All went well on the trip, the trailer is winterized, the new mirrors installed, and we are waiting until Feb to resume our travels. May be we will travel more that 100 miles from home next year.
God bless each of you! Have a great time.

RE: Didn't winterize

Can you leave the hotwater heater turned on with electric and not have to worry about draining the WH?
Would an indoor heat source also help?
Just curious... :)

RE: NEWBIE

I took my wife on her first and last camping trip in a tent. 100 mph winds, trees being blown down around us, tent springing down and up, rain from all directions... it was awful! She told me it would cost me to go camping again.
Thus I have purchased our travel trailer, named "Storm" after her first experience and still haven't had so much as a drizzle of rain. She's waiting though to see how the trailer does. :)

RE: Towing in windy conditions...

Thanks for the advice. I will get new mirrors for better visibility. I bought some that "clip" on the existing factory mirrors and there is so much vibration that it is hard to tell much.
I will try to keep a careful, watchful eye out to my surroundings as well.
As for earlier questions, I have a Reese sway bar that is attached to the trailer and tow ball.
What the DW was warning me about when we were traveling was that she saw "daylight" under the tire. The movement wasn't much in her opinion. All the same, I do realize now that I will have to be more aware and slow down in those situations.
If I hadn't needed to get back home we probably would have stayed another night.
After she let me know what she saw, my speed did decrease to about 50 mph and didn't have any other incidents.
I really do appreciate all the feed back and hopefully the new mirrors will help. Does anybody have a suggestion as to what type of mirrors I can replace mine with? TV a 2000 Expedition.
Again, thanks. :)

RE: Towing in windy conditions...

Also, to clarify...
I do not talk on my cell phone excessively while driving or any other time. As for the severity of the raise in the tires off of the pavement, it was breifly and my wife saw it while following behind me. There was no great pitch in the trailer.
I do want to safely operate on the roads and not endanger any one.

RE: Towing in windy conditions...

I gotta say it - if you didn't know what your trailer was doing, and it took a cell phone call to tell you - stop towing a trailer now, and learn how to drive. Not to mention it's unsafe to talk on a cell phone while driving at the best of times!
Part of safe driving is knowing how to drive in windy conditions. Slow down. Pay attention to what's going on with traffic and your vehicle. Develop skills and use them.
And how do you develop this experience without doing it? And while I realize that it is unsafe to drive while on a cell, that is what blue tooth is for so that both hands are available for driving.
I was asking for advice, not admonishments. I am new and learning... as I am sure you did at one point in history.

RE: Towing in windy conditions...

I can only think of 3 things:
When it will be that windy stay home
If you must go drive slower
Is your wife riding in the TT while on the road? If so, I think it's illegal and, if not, is a bad idea.
No, wife was following in her car. I did slow down after she called and we both had to return home from an outing.
(Now, I wouldn't have minded my mother-in-law to have been in there! ;):B)
But what I was wondering about is how do you tell that it is occuring while you are driving? I couldn't tell any difference either in the mirrors or in the TV.

Towing in windy conditions...

This past weekend I was towing and the passenger's side of the trailer came up to where it only had two wheels ( the driver's side) on the pavement while traveling at 60 mgh. If my wife hadn't called me on her cell, I wouldn't have known. How can I avoide this when we are towing and are only using one vehicle?
Thank God nothing happened, but it kind of worries me...
thanks

RE: Yet one more question about winterizing...

Thanks for the help. I think that once I have the process down, it'll be easier so that we can use it on and off all winter.
Thanks so much...have a great day!!

RE: Yet one more question about winterizing...

Found ball valve and poked it, got pink out.
Thanks.
How about the underside of the trailer? Do I need to open that valve if I have never used the fresh water tank?

RE: Yet one more question about winterizing...

Sorry, no I didn't. What do I need to do with the outside water connection. The only thing that I have done up to this point is hook up the water hose to it when we take her out.:?
Thanks,

Did you flush the toilet so that it ran pink too? The rest sounds like a job well done!

RE: Yet one more question about winterizing...

Did you flush the toilet, tap the valve inside the outside water connection, run the shower hose, put some in the shower drain??? I often open my low point drains till they are pink in case of any water collection there..I assume you have a WH by pass??? It is certainly optional but I put some vaseline on the blade and seal in the toilet so that there is not sticking in the spring, and close all of my faucets/valves so that the washer can't dry out (sometimes can leak for a while at first use later. ....Brian
Yes, I did flush the toilet, ran some in the shower drain, and left some in the toilet. All faucet/valves are closed. And yes I do have a WH by pass. Do I still need to drain from under the trailer??? I have never used the fresh water tanks. :h
Thanks,
Bryan

Yet one more question about winterizing...

I have just put the pick stuff all through my TT. But I wonder if I did it right or will it need to do it again.
I had the pump to pump it to the farthest (kitchen) and then worked my way back toward the closest (toilet). I ensured that the out side shower ran pink, as well as the bath room sink and shower. I poured some of the pick stuff in both sinks and in the toilet for safety ( I hope) and am getting ready to drain the water heater.
Anything more that I need to do, or have I got it just about right?
Thanks for helping the newbie. :h
